So on Thursday, I got a text message from a co worker saying " Lenny B on the #AskGaryVee Show".
I kinda knew what that meant, but it hadn't sink in, just yet. Then I thought about it, I must have been featured on Gary Vaynerchuk's newest YouTube episode.
Now, if you haven't been up to date with what exactly the #askgaryvee show is, please take a break from reading this and go watch it on YouTube, I promise you won't be upset for doing it. You'll find his videos much more interesting than this blog post.
However, if you have seen the videos, then you have a little idea of why I was so excited and I want to explain 3 things I learned from just being featured in that small window during this episode.
First, I want to go into how excited I was to be included in the show (if you couldn't tell by watching the video) Gary Vaynerchuk is the CEO of Vaynermedia which is a major marketing player for the top companies in the world, for example GE, Toyota and others. But other than that, I have been watching Gary Vaynerchuk's videos for years! Consistently every night watching at least one of this videos either from his Daily Vee, his AskGaryVee or any other Keynote video I can find, Heck I would re watch the same videos sometimes in the same day. Why? Because I needed the inspiration and motivation.
His style and personality is perfect for my attitude, I like straight forward talk that doesn't beat around the bush, I also HATE when other mentors create a cookie cutter solution as if everyone has the same kind of skill or mindset. That's what drew me so much to Gary Vee, it's his way of personalizing and understanding that everyone is not the same and he accepts that. In the recent months, I have seen other mentors start changing their words to similarly reflect what Gary is teaching on their shows and content, which obviously means Gary is on to something.
But anyways, this post is about what I learned by being featured on his show. Now, I am not talking about the obvious message that Fredrik and Gary both gave me when they answered my question, I'm talking about something much deeper!
1. Perfection is the enemy of taking action:
You guys must have heard this many times, I am sure of it. However, I would have to give you a little more context so you can understand how I learned this by being featured on Gary Vee's Show.
While they were filming the show, I was in a networking event; talking to many people, eating great guacamole with chips and having a Corona. I made great connections with tech startup founders and even a millionaire matchmaker (which was extremely interesting) However, me being a millennial, I am consistently checking my social media feeds on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.
And yes, I know you are all thinking, "Who uses Twitter?"
Well, this is how I found out about the opportunity to ask my questions on the #AskGaryVee show. I saw a tweet from Gary asking for questions to ask Fredrik Eklund from Million Dollar Listing New York.
This was my 1 opportunity, to ask questions to 2 major people that I see as role models! I had to take the chance.
So I started sending multiple questions to India, which I knew would be reading the questions (because I see the show all the time) At this point, it wasn't about asking the perfect question, but asking multiple questions quickly in order to break through the rest of the people that I knew would be asking questions.
I knew it worked, when India sent me a tweet saying, " Hey, can you send us a video message?"
Now, I could've easily frozen and started thinking about how I looked, the event I was currently in or any of that other easily stuff, but I didn't. I went straight into the hallway and recorded the question, I didn't even get to preview it to see if I said everything correctly or if I was asking the RIGHT question, I just recorded and sent!
It was huge for me cause I knew that thousands of people would watch this video! But I also knew that I couldn't care about perfection, and only worry about getting through and being on the show.
It Worked!
2. Twitter still works:
Now, I hear all the time how Twitter is lacking growth and how much it's going to fail, However I honestly believe that they are wrong. Twitter is a huge player in the world!
Not only because of me getting on the show but did you see what Kanye did in NYC using twitter?
I mean that is amazing! The return on investment Kanye and many other have by using Twitter the right way is intense!
I just honestly feel it isn't being utilized correctly by companies and marketers. Why? Because the feed goes to quickly, yes, But also because they aren't willing to put in the time!
Twitter should be used the same way you play Text Role Playing Games! Don't know what I am talking about? Download KIK app, go to Bot Shop and play their adventure games. I bet you will have a blast and see the connection companies can have with their customers with Twitter.
Maybe it will inspire you to use Twitter more!
